We are back to school after our unexpected four day weekend. I’ve been meaning to share one of my 7th graders first projects. I always like to have something up for Open House, so I had students trace their hand and arm on tagboard. They searched through magazines for images, words, designs and colors that described their personality and collaged their hand. Each student also cut out the letters of their name as a final touch. I love the way the hands turned out. Each one is truly full of personality- it really helpd me to get to know my students too. I painted this little sign for the center of the wall and we taped the hands right to the wall radiating from it. This is just a portion of the installation. The hands ended up filling the whole wall! Fun :).

You are such an amazing teacher…encouraging students to express who they truly are, and providing a medium for them to do just that!

We have the best art teacher in the world right at SJH!!! What lucky kids. Hopefully, one day my children will get to experience the wonders of Mrs. Speelmen or as Bryce says “mewissa”

LOVED THIS! So sad to see it go from the wall, but look forward to the next awesome display- I love that I am right down the hall from your class- that way I get to see all of your students’ masterpieces!

Hi Melissa,
I love your blog. I think I want one too, now. I teach art to k-5 in Houston at St. John’s School. This project looks like a great way to start the year. I don’t have tons of magazines at the start of the year, so I think I will just do mine in collage. Is this mural done by ALL of your classes, or just a grade level? Just curious. It’s very eye catching!
