My mother has so kindly offered up for public ridicule some vintage images of her famous Polyester Bikini. That’s Melissa in the backyard kiddie pool and that’s me sitting in front of the record collection.
But I think the bottom photo of Melissa and two of her friends–who also had the pleasure of wearing the Polyester Bikini–best displays the swimsuit’s inability to stay in place while enjoying some fun in the sun.
In my mom’s defense, I do love that she sewed us cute clothes when we were little, I just think bathing suits are something best purchased.

Stacy B - Haha! I love it!
Back in the 80s my mom made her own swimsuits. It was a great pattern. She made a very cute white one… and then she got brave and made one out of a fine-wale burgundy CORDUROY!!
Nancy - I love this post! These pics wouldn’t be the same with a store bought swim suit
Julie - It appears that you have that wonderful sense of humor I love in Melissa. Your comments about the last image had me laughing out loud! I always enjoy a little peek into your childhood.
Laura Speelman - Those bikinis are cute. …and so was the models
Dana Darbyshire - looks like Truitt in a two piece
Jeanie DeTemple - I agree with Dana…Truitt looks sooo much like Melissa. Cute pictures!
kris - Ooooooooooolala! Really…is there any suit that stays in place:)
Jodi Kinasewitz - Hilarious! Thanks for sharing- I am sure Melissa will be thrilled!
Tori - ahhh….Polyester goodness.
