frecklephoto academy Workbooks

I have had quite a few e-mails inquiring about the possibility of scheduling another frecklephoto academy.  Right now, our family does not have a weekend free until November (isn’t that ridiculous!).  Basically 2009 is out, I’ll see how crazy our life is next summer and consider having another workshop then.  In the meantime, I’ve also had some inquiries about the workbooks I gave each participant.  I decided to make them available through my publisher, Lulu.  The workbooks mirror the information I covered at the workshop.  Of course, I was also able to elaborate and answer questions during that time.  The DSLR Training book also outlines the exercises we completed during the workshop.  Click the link HERE or the image above to get to my storefront on Lulu.  You can also click through the first few pages of the book.  The books are paperback, 15 pages and feature my photos along with the workshop text.  Thanks so much for all the support I have received throughout this adventure!

FPA 2

Today was the second frecklephoto academy.  I had another INCREDIBLE group!  These are the only pictures I took . . . I kept bringing my camera outside when everyone was doing exercises, but I kept forgetting to take pictures!  I think we had a few “ah-ha” moments in each group which is always nice.  I can’t wait to see what all my fpa grads post to the Flickr group!  Thanks so much for being a part of frecklephoto academy!  I hope you all had as much fun as I did :) .

Last call . . .

I will be hosting the second frecklephoto academy workshop this Sunday at Swaim Lodge.  I still have a few spots left.  The “Learning to See Creatively” workshop will be from 9am-11am and the “DSLR Training” workshop runs from 12:30 to 3pm.  For more information click HERE.  This is a hands on workshop so you will need to bring your camera.  I have also set up a Flickr group for participants to join after taking the workshop.  It is a place to post images, ask questions and get feedback.  If you participated in the first frecklephoto academy make sure you check out the discussion page on Flickr.  I just posted a photo challenge for you :) .

Contact me at lucylomax@cinci.rr.com if your are interested in one of the workshops this weekend.  Happy snapping!

frecklephoto academy!

I want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to all of today’s frecklephoto academy participants . . . you were awesome!  I was pretty nervous at first, but all of your friendly faces definitley helped to put me at ease.  I truly hope that each and every one of you walked away feeling more confident about your photography skills. Remember to practice what you learned today-  over time it will become second nature.  I also want to add that I couldn’t have ask for a better group of people- thanks for making today so great!  Thanks also to my good friend Julie who drove down from Columbus today,  took the photos above and provided much needed moral support :) .

It’s almost here . . .

 . . . the END of school!

 . . . a post-a-day summer!!

. . . the first ever frecklephoto academy!!!

I’m so very excited about all three of these things!  My last day of school is FRIDAY (yippee).  A-post-a-day summer begins Saturday (which also happens to be my BIRTHDAY).  Tuesday, June 9th marks the first ever frecklephoto academy- which I am ever so excited about.  I wrote a mini-book for each of the classes and they arrived this week (they make me giddy!).  I’ve worked so hard on these workshops- I really want them to be fabulous.  I have one spot open in the DSLR Training class (see class descriptions under the “Workshops” tab at the top of my blog) if anyone is interested.  The Learning to See Creatively class is full!  I am so excited to meet everyone!  Oh, and I couldn’t post without a photo (or two)- I could just gobble Elle’s toes right up :) .

Update!

First of all, I need to let everyone know that I am officially booked for summer photo sessions.  It’s so hard for me to turn people away, but I’m already over my projected number of sessions.  For the sake of my family (and my sanity) I need to stop scheduling sessions.

I also wanted to  give you a workshop update.  The photo on the left is courtesy of Jess Korner, who will be traveling all the way from West Virginia for both workshops!  If you signed up for the DSLR Training workshop I sent you an e-mail with a lens recommendation (50mm 1.8).  I know many of you put it on your Mother’s Day wish list.  Jess was so excited about her new lens that she sent me a couple of photos taken with her new 50mm.   Such a great shot of her son Drew!  We will talk about this lens at the workshop, but it is certainly not required that you purchase it.

I am writing a little workbook for each of the workshops and I just finished the second one (yippee!).  I’m truly so excited about teaching this workshop.

So here’s the latest, the Learning to see Creatively workshop on June 9th is full.  There are two spots left in the July 19th section. Both of the DSLR Training workshops have four openings.  If you are interested in reserving a spot, just e-mail me at lucylomax@cinci.rr.com .

Workshop Details

I sent out workshop details this week to everyone who sent me their e-mail address.  If I missed you, please let me know so I can be sure to get you on my list.  For those of you are interested, but procrastinated (like I tend to do)- you will see a link at the top of my blog that says “Workshops”.  Just click that link and you will be able to see all the current workshop information.

The classes are filling up, so if you want “in” be sure to e-mail me asap!  I’m SO excited about the first ever frecklephoto academy!  It’s gonna be a blast!!!

Looks like it’s a GO!

Well, it looks like there is plenty of interest out there!  Thanks so much to everyone who left a comment or e-mailed me.  You have all been added to my mailing list.  Now I need to begin ironing out the details.  I have a location in mind for the workshops- I need to make sure it is available.  I’m hoping to secure two dates- a weekday in early June and a Sunday mid-July.  Hopefully between the two dates I can accomodate everyone who is interested in attending.  I’ll e-mail the specifics out at soon as I know them.  If you haven’t given me your e-mail address yet I’ll keep checking the comments on the last post or you can just e-mail me directly (lucylomax@cinci.rr.com).

I can’t tell you how excited I am about all of this!  Thanks so much to all of you for making it happen! And don’t worry- I’ll be posting more photos soon!

Want to take better photos?

Wondering why today’s images are such a blast from the past?  I wanted to show a collection of my point and shoot images.  I’ve been tossing around the idea of offering an introductory photography workshop for a while now.  The workshop(s) would be geared toward anyone who would like to take better photos of their families and friends.  I have been taking pictures since fourth grade (my first camera took 110 film and used disposable flash cubes!).  I’ve learned loads and loads along the way and I’ve always felt that anyone can take great photos.  Most people just need to be pointed in the right direction.

I have two different workshops in mind and I’d like to get some feedback from my loyal frecklephoto followers to see if there is any interest out there.

Workshop #1:  My first workshop idea is geared toward people who simply want to learn how to take better candid photographs of their families.  All of the images above were taken with a point and shoot.  You don’t need a pricey digital SLR camera to take great photos.  In fact the top right image above was printed in USA Today.  It was taken in my front yard with a point and shoot.   Our families are growing and changing SO fast-don’t miss it because you feel like you need a bigger, better camera.  I can give you some great tips that will leave your friends and family saying, “Did you take that?!”  This class could be taken with a point and shoot camera or a digital SLR.

Workshop #2:  My second idea is for those of you out there who bought a digital SLR (one of those big cameras that have interchangeable lenses) and have either a) Never taken it out of the box or b) Never taken it off of Auto mode.  While this workshop would be more technical in nature it would not be geared toward teaching you how to use every single button and feature on your camera.  I will focus on the way I photograph children and families using Aperture Priority mode (it’s not that hard I promise!).  We will go over the basic elements of photography (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) in understandable terms and relate them specifically to taking better photos with your DSLR.

I’m putting this out there to see if there is an interest.  I haven’t completely convinced myself that I have time for this, but it’s something I’ve thought a lot about.  I’m passionate about teaching and photography- it seems pretty natural to put the two together.

If you are interested in taking one the workshops I described above, please complete the poll below.  If there is enough interest, I’d like to schedule a workshop in June or July.  Each workshop would be about two hours long with shooting time included to practice what you’ve learned.  The workshops will be in the neighborhood of $100 to $125 which will include materials, a meeting location and a few fun extras.  More details to come.

I will be sending out more information via e-mail sometime in May.  If you would like to be included in that mailing please leave a comment below (your e-mail address will be included on the comment form and visible only to me) or e-mail me directly lucylomax@cinci.rr.com.
