My hometown . . .

Shelby Flood.jpg

This is Shelby, Ohio–my hometown.  On Tuesday Shelby encountered the worst flood in the town’s history. The last time Shelby had significant flooding I was a Junior at Shelby Senior High. Actually, I remember it well. The photos above look a lot like the flood of ’87.  These photos were taken by Mindy Utz, one of my high school classmates (Thanks Mindy!). Twenty-two people had to be rescued–two by a Coast Guard helipcopter. I’m happy to report that my mom and stepdad are doing just fine. Luckily they do not live in the flood plain. The Blackfork splits the town in half so anyone needing to get to the hospital has to board a boat and cross the river. The Blackfork also goes right through the center of town. I remember it took quite some time to re-build after the flood. My heart goes out to those families who lost homes and businesses.

Jodi Kinasewitz - WOW! How devastating! This is so sad! I had no idea- I have not heard anything on the news, but that is probably because I rarely watch the news! I am glad your family is safe! My heart goes out to the victims too!

Barb - It has been awful here in Mansfield too. The Post Office was flooded out and we have not gotten any mail now for 2 days. Not quite as bad as Shelby but close enough. I couldn’t get to work Tuesday due to all the roads blocked off. Luckily Steve and Edie fair well despite the fact that they had lake front property (or I should say lake back). The river came up pretty high in their yard but has went back down today. I am glad your mom and stepdad are OK too!

Laura Speelman - Poor Shelby! I forgot about your Mom and Stepdad being there. So happy to hear they were not in the mess of it.
